Frequently Asked Questions – Munn Septic Service

At Munn Septic Service, we know how important it is to keep your septic system running efficiently. We’re here to answer the most common questions homeowners have, so you can stay informed and avoid costly issues.

Why is my high-water alarm going off?

A high-water alarm usually means your lift station pump isn’t working as it should. It could be caused by a bad pump, float switch, electrical issue, or another malfunction that’s preventing the pump from turning on. If you see water above the pump level, your system likely isn’t pumping properly and needs attention.

What are the warning signs of a failing septic system?

Here are some red flags to watch for:

  • Wet or soggy spots in your yard or over the drain field
  • Drains that are slow or making gurgling sounds
  • Trouble flushing toilets
  • Strong, unpleasant odors near the system
  • Grass growing greener and thicker over the leach field

If you notice any of these, it’s time to give Munn Septic Service a call.

Why are my drains making gurgling sounds?

This usually means there’s a blockage in the main sewer line or your septic tank is too full. Sometimes it can also mean there’s poor venting in your plumbing system. We recommend having it inspected to avoid backup or damage.

How often should I pump my septic tank?

Most households should pump their tanks every 2 to 3 years. If you use a garbage disposal often or have a large family, it’s best to pump every 1 to 2 years. Regular pumping helps extend the life of your system and prevent backups.

How long does a septic system last?

With proper maintenance, a septic system can last 20 to 30 years or more. Factors like soil type, how often it’s pumped, system design, and usage all play a role in how long it lasts.

How close do you need to be to my tank?

Our trucks are equipped with hoses that can reach up to 200 feet. If your tank is farther than that, we can often extend the hose, though extra charges may apply.

Can I use a garbage disposal with my septic system?

Yes, but use it sparingly. Food waste and grease from disposals don’t break down easily and can lead to faster buildup in your tank, requiring more frequent pumping.

Is it okay to plant trees near my septic system?

Avoid planting trees or large shrubs near your septic tank or drain field. Roots can damage the system and clog pipes. Keep all plants with aggressive root systems at least 10 feet away.

Can I flush wet wipes?

No. Even if labeled “flushable,” wet wipes don’t break down in your system. They can clog pipes, jam pumps, and cause major damage. Always throw wipes in the trash.

Can I drive over my leach field?

Only lightweight equipment like lawn mowers should go over the leach field. Heavy vehicles can compact the soil and damage the pipes below, especially if the ground is wet.
